If you have dark skin chances are you need more than one foundation, maybe three, because dark skin is never one color.
So, if you have like NC 50 skin you might be able to get a way with applying NC 45 in the inner portion of your skin and than working a deeper (make sure the undertone goes with your skin) color for contouring and your true shade around the perimeter.
